Nov. 26, 2025 – Newcomer Centre’s very own Executive Director, Sam Juru, warmly welcomed external guests to the Impact Info Session and shared some of his own newcomer experiences. Then it was John Chandok, Newcomer Essential Skills Training (NEST) program facilitator, that gave a short presentation on the NEST program.
Then one of the current NEST participants, a lovely woman over 60 years of age, shared her newcomer experience and highlighted how meaningful the NEST program has been for her and her family. It’s been quite a journey from feeling isolated and cradling her terrified babies on the trip to Canada telling them it’ll be okay – Canada will be better for them – to now engaging in community, using email and feeling like she belongs here in Edmonton.
One of our donors had to leave early due to another appointment, but told us that, “These Impact Info Sessions keep getting better and better.”
On Jan. 28, 2026, the Youth Leading Change (YLC) program was showcased. There were (40) people in attendance from various sectors and agencies, as well as program funders/evaluators. Attendees heard about the program through a short presentation delivered by Mikayla Stevens, YLC Program Coordinator, and then met with five of the program participants to hear about the special art pieces created specifically to help others learn about what the program means to the participants and how it has helped to shape their lives.Â
