ESL Assistant ( CLB 2 )

Description 

The Newcomer Centre offers a wide range of English classes and learning activities for newcomers. Volunteers support ESL teachers in the classroom, lead small groups in separate activities or help people one-on-one. Above all, ESL volunteers welcome newcomers to Edmonton and introduce them to Canadian life! 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Assist the teacher in English classes with different in-class activities
• Support newcomers’ adults in reading practice
• Listen to the student’s reading and correct pronunciation
• Provide one-on-one English support when needed
• Engage with students through conversation practice
• Encourage the students to learn

To Volunteer in This Role You Should:

• Be mature and reliable
• Speak, read and write English fluently
• Take initiative and connect well with people
• Be flexible, patient and a good communicator
• Respect people of all cultures
• Be organized, encouraging and adaptable
• Be able to guide people through learning activities
• Reliably commit to a volunteer schedule
• Teaching, adult education or ESL experience is welcome

Minimum Commitment

4+ hours per week for a minimum commitment of 4 months

The Newcomer Centre runs programs for immigrants and refugees in the Edmonton area. We look forward to getting to know you, as together we bring services and friendship to newcomers in Canada.
