The Newcomer Centre offers a wide range of English classes and learning activities for newcomers. Volunteers support ESL teachers in the classroom, lead small groups in separate activities or help people one-on-one. Above all, ESL volunteers welcome newcomers to Edmonton and introduce them to Canadian life!Â
Key Responsibilities:Â
- Assist the teacher in English classes with different in-class activities
- Support newcomers’ adults in reading practice
- Listen to the student’s reading and correct pronunciation
- Provide one-on-one English support when needed
- Engage with students through conversation practice
- Encourage the students to learn
To Volunteer in This Role You Should:
- Be mature and reliable
- Speak, read and write English fluently
- Take initiative and connect well with people
- Be flexible, patient and a good communicator
- Respect people of all cultures
- Be organized, encouraging and adaptable
- Be able to guide people through learning activities
- Reliably commit to a volunteer schedule
- Teaching, adult education or ESL experience is welcome
Minimum Commitment
4+ hours per week for a minimum commitment of 4 months
