Sandra Moreno is a public servant, educator, and community leader with more than 20 years of experience advancing human rights, social inclusion, and public safety across government, nonprofit, and international settings.
As a young refugee from El Salvador, Sandra brings both lived and professional experience to supporting newcomers. Her passion is rooted in a deep understanding of the challenges many newcomers face, including navigating unfamiliar systems, accessing support, and rebuilding a sense of belonging in a new community.
Sandra is particularly committed to advancing mental health support for newcomers, recognizing that many individuals and families carry experiences and losses that are often invisible to the systems receiving them. She believes that successful settlement involves more than access to services; it also requires opportunities for healing, connection, and meaningful participation in community life.
Throughout her career, Sandra has worked at the intersection of public service, justice, and human rights, while also contributing to nonprofit organizations and community boards. She currently serves as a Strategic Project Advisor with the City of Edmonton and is a sessional instructor at Lethbridge College. Her work has been recognized nationally and internationally through partnerships and initiatives focused on human rights, anti-racism, and strengthening relationships between institutions and the communities they serve.
Sandra holds a Master of Arts in Human Security and Peacebuilding from Royal Roads University and is honoured to serve on the Newcomer Centre Board of Directors.
