The STEP Program supports newcomers of all educational backgrounds and work experience levels in developing employment-related skills to successfully access the Canadian labour market.
Participants are placed into Stream 1 or 2 based on their English language proficiency. Both streams offer employment readiness workshops alongside English language and ESL training tailored to meet employment goals.
Program Objectives
- Finding employment, education, or volunteer opportunities
- Creating resumes and cover letters
- Vocationally focused English proficiency courses
- Understanding Canadian workplace culture
- Learning about Alberta workplace rights and responsibilities
- Exploring further education and training options
- Connecting with local employers
Participant Benefits
- One-on-one support to complete intake and Employment Readiness Assessments (ERA), or referral to internal Language testing to determine individual needs.
- Program placement based on English proficiency:
- Stream 1: high English proficiency (CLB 4 and above)
- Stream 2: lower English proficiency (CLB 3 and below)
- Opportunities to build skills and gain labour market knowledge through:
- Workshops
- Job fairs
- Employment events
- Information sessions
- ESL with employment-focused content for Stream 2 participants
- Support in developing a strengths-based career plan
- Coaching on interview skills and job search strategies
- Guidance on Alberta hiring practices, workplace customs, and responsibilities
Eligibility Requirements
The program is open to:
- Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW) with valid work permits
- International Mobility Program (IMP) participants
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders
- Refugee Claimants
